About Beatty

Section A · The Town

The little town the desert kept for itself

Beatty is an old gold-rush town on Highway 95 that the modern world mostly drove past — and that is exactly its charm. Wild burros amble down the shoulder like they own it. The gateway to Death Valley sits just over the ridge. In every direction there are ghost towns, open-air art and wide desert quiet, waiting for anyone willing to take the turn.

The front porch of Death Valley

Beatty is the closest Nevada town to the park. The road west drops you toward Zabriskie Point, the salt flats at Badwater and the great dunes in under an hour — so you can gas up, grab a bite and still be back for supper.

The wild burros of Main Street

Descended from the pack animals of the mining days, Beatty's burros never left. They wander right through town, grazing the roadside and stopping traffic with a shrug. Bring a camera and a little patience — and give them their space.

Rhyolite & the Goldwell sculptures

A boomtown that went bust in a decade, Rhyolite still stands in pieces against the hills — bank walls, a bottle house, an empty depot. Next door, the Goldwell Open Air Museum puts ghostly modern sculpture out in the open desert.

Beatty Is Closer Than You Think

Plenty of people have driven through Beatty. Far fewer have actually stopped — fuel at the edge of town, maybe a snack, then back on Highway 95. That’s the mistake. Ginny Faulkner of the Beatty Chamber of Commerce on the mountains, the food, and why the drive stops being the boring part.

This town is full of stories — the neighbor who worked the Test Site, the family shop that's outlived three booms, the person you can't stop talking about because the whole town has to hear this. Big laughs, hard years, quiet triumphs — sometimes all three in one life. This space celebrates them: people and places alike, in their own words. Nominate someone you admire — or tell us your own.

Up the mountain: Mt. Charleston & the Spring Mountains

When the valley settles into triple digits, the high country next door is typically 20–30 degrees cooler than the valley floor. Pine shade, picnic spots and trailheads from easy strolls to all-day climbs — close enough to leave after breakfast and be home for supper.

Pack a light jacket for the evening, check seasonal road conditions before you head up, and bring water — mountain miles still count as desert miles.
